tomorrow is Martin Luther King's birthday.
and of course Tuesday is the inauguration.
from the soon to be published book: "Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country: A collection of kids' letters to President Obama:" from a letter to Obama written by Pamela Mejia, age 11, Boston:
"I think you should try to change the world by building shelters for the people who live in the streets. It's the beginning of January, and it's cold...."
now it's not cold here in SF. it's too hot and it may mean a drought but regardless of the weather people deserve shelter. we all agree.
few people do anything to help, including me.
my daughter participated in feeding homeless people in Southern California when she was just a young high school student. religiously, she spent one day a week collecting produce, preparing fresh food and distributing it to homeless people in local parks, along with other young people. their actions made them appear wiser and superior to adults. unlike me, she never talked about the problem, she just acted in a way to help. she also spent a week living in a homeless shelter and helping out. she never speaks about it.
