bullocks tea room on wilshire is now a law school

this Bullock's was west of downtown. i never went to it in its heyday, when it was glamorous with a porte corchere, i think its called for autos to drive up and disgorge milady to an attendant. but i sauntered into it in its declining years when its tawdriness reflected the descent of its neighborhood from gentry to derelict. there was an i. magnin around there too. i never would have dared to enter these astonishing art deco buildings in their prime, but i felt a communion with them as they struggled to maintain their pride despite the peeling paint, dirty windows and sidewalks, worn floors and stale air. the tea room now painted an insane asylum cheap mint green, even the mirrors, painted over, the tiny metal chairs, now the resting place for eccentric "old ladies" in hats with pink roses to match the powder blush of their cheeks.
