this was the purple banner leading the way for the annual walk against rape down mission today.
it was a much bigger crowd than last year, led by a middle or older aged woman (my age) with a bullhorn- "hey ho, hey ho, date rape has got to go" and "this is what the future looks like"...
accompanied by police with nightsticks on bicycles and followed up by a big yellow flatbed with a percussion band, it was mostly young women walking..it was heartfelt.
pictured at left was last year's parade with a much smaller turnout than this year's parade.
but i have mixed feelings about females portraying themselves as victims. i can't sort it out easily. certainly recent headline news lets us all know that women can be just as predatory as any other gender. are modern stresses leading to increased violence perpetrated by women? are predatory females still much rarer than the male variety? i don' t know, but maybe as we see the similarities between us, that both sexes are capable of heinous acts as well as of great accomplishments, maybe someday, the genders will be equally valued in society. maybe.
